Chinese toys unsafe for our children?

According to Yahoo! News, Chinese toys need export licenses after the safety of the toys has been brought into question.

Seven new product types need the licences, which have to be renewed every three years rather than the previous five years, said Li Qingxiang, the deputy director general of the Guangdong Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau.

“All the new toys will have to be inspected for safety and to make sure they reach the required standard before they can be produced and exported,” he said, adding that the regulations could put upward pressure on manufacturing costs.

This is following the toy giant Mattel’s decision to recall 18 million toys after concerns arose surrounding the levels of toxic lead paint on the toys, and the small magnets that could cause children to choke on them. This has tarnished China’s toy industry and created an overwhelming amount of international pressure for change.
