One of the most profitable of collectible toys comes in the shape of celebrity dolls. Dolls such as Michael Jackson, Spice Girls and the Beatles will all go up in value over time due to the status of the artist at the time. They represent great investments, so long as you time it right and buy smart.
For example, there was a range of Michael Jackson dolls produced in the early Eighties that came in five different costume variants; Motown 25, Thriller, Billie Jean, Grammy Awards and American Music Awards. Of those five the American Music Awards and the Motown 25 are the rarer costumes, thus boxed versions of those dolls tend to sell for more money.
In addition to the dolls, the costumes were also sold separately in packs - which obviously are also worth quite a bit if you can get them sealed on the card. The seperate costume packs however also consisted of an additional costume, which was Human Nature.
In the Nineties however another series of Michael Jackson dolls was released with electronic singing ability. These dolls retailed initially for £50, which was very expensive for a doll. They eventually came down to £5 in some shops, and after the collectible success of the original dolls were snapped up in their thousands by people looking to cash in on their perceived future value.
Consequently there are hundreds of these dolls on eBay, none of them selling or worth anything in particular!
The moral here is that not all celebrity dolls are valuable and their value is partially indicative of the celebrities status at the time. In the Eighties Michael Jackson was the biggest star on the planet and merchandise from that time period is worth far more than merchandise from the later Nineties.
